This would have to be one of the best presented books I’ve seen. A really complete work, covering everything from basic principals of imaging, through to digital darkroom techniques. Practical tips and tricks, and nice personal touch commentary. Currently my favourite book on UW photography.

The book has beautiful illustrations and is easy reading. Underwater photography is covered in detail. Plenty of how to information. The book is worth reading twice and using for reference.

This review relates to the Third edition of this book (published in 2007) and was submitted to Amazon.com on 6 March 2008. I do not understand why Amazon.com are showing the date of this review as February 2005!
I have just had the privilege of spending a full day with Martin Edge brushing up on my own photographic skills and learning a great deal more besides. I found him to be a man with considerable patience who pays a great deal of attention to detail. I mention this because those two attributes are reproduced in this outstanding book.
To put it another way, Martin Edge not only understands underwater photography like nobody else I have ever met, he also able to put his knowledge and skills into writing in a manner where we are all able to learn.
In this Third edition of his most successful book, Martin covers the latest techniques for digital equipment. If, like me, you were hoping to get at least another season out of your infallible 35mm film cameras and you trusty housing – forget it. Digital is here to stay and the age of film processing has all but disappeared.
In addition to the equipment, this entire process also requires complete retraining and the re-learning of old skills and this book is where that journey continues.
My honest advice to anyone who has an underwater digital camera system is to read this book and then wait a week and read it again! If, on the other hand, you are at a stage where you are thinking of “going digital” then do exactly the same before buying that all-important equipment. In both cases you will have learned a great deal and, like me, will be better off for having done so.

Martin Edge provides a comprehensive introduction to underwater photography. He covers everything from camera basics to handling the distractions of being underwater to lighting. I thought his balance of content was excellent. The many color photograph examples were also very useful in understanding each element. A must buy for new U/W photographers.
