Top Five Compact Consumer Digital Cameras. August 2009
2009 has seen a number of impressive consumer digital cameras hit the market. None more so than the five we have selected below. Ranging in price and features, it’s no wonder why these have been at the right end of top sellers lists throughout the year. Let’s waste no time in getting to know them:
Panasonic Lumix TZ7
This camera almost needs no introduction, flying off the shelves at every camera and electrical shop. Stunning Image quality all round, HD movies, sharp focus and a good image stabilizer. The lumix 12x optical zoom is a real winner, and has produced stunning results in the labs. 27 scene modes will keep you busy, however the auto mode is a solid option. 10.1 MP Panasonic Lumix TZ-7 is a strong contender and will be here for a while. Serious consideration @ £280.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS15
Similar to the TZ-7, this 12 megapixel offering boasts a smaller, slicker frame – making it extremely portable. Picture quality, again is stunning – something we have come to expect from the Panasonics. There have been some complaints about small buttons, generally OK unless you have large fingers. The lack of HD is also worth noting. Not a bad deal for £149.95
The first thing you’ll notice about this camera, its good looks. Undoubtedly the sexiest camera we’ve seen this year – and not too bad inside. Tiny dimensions and rounded corners allow it to slip into the picket. Couple this with good picture quality, quick responsiveness and ease-of-use, you can see why this has been selling well. Available in silver, red, black and gold. There is no wide-angle lens, and in tests the body has scratched and marked easily.
Sony Cybershot t900
Another attractive camera here, excellent build quality and a nice polished finish. Feels durable, typical of Sony. Can record high quality HD videos, although maybe you’d expect more at such a highly priced camera. The T900 is by far the most expensive out of these cameras, and some users have reported less than amazing image quality. Opinion seems to be mixed about the sliding method of opening, decide for yourself! Expensive, but still a top notch 12 mp digital camera.
Samsung ES15
The ES15 represents the budget choice in our shortlist. This 10 mp digital camera represents a great bargain at only £68.96. Plenty of options, great quality pictures and an attractive design make it a worthwhile consideration. It’s easy to use and ideal for a beginner. Definitely worth a shout!

Consumer Guide: Types of Digital Cameras
Digital cameras are growing in popularity because of the many advantages they offer. Digital cameras allow you to store fun and memorable memories and delete at will those snapshots you do not need. You can also use software and in-camera editing features to improve your photo quality with a digital camera. Overall, digital cameras are easy and convenient to use. They provide high-quality shots for your picture-taking needs.
How do Digital Cameras work?
Digital cameras record your photo through a light-sensitive circuit, usually a CCD (charge-coupled device) or a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductors). As the light strikes the circuit, it converts the light to picture elements, better known as pixels. Each pixel is a dot that represents a tiny portion of the photo. By combining all the pixels, a photo or image is made which is then stored in a memory card.
To know what type of digital camera to buy, read about the 3 types of digital cameras such as Sony digital cameras, Nikon Digital cameras, Olympus Digital cameras and Canon digital cameras below.
Ultra-compact models
Canon digital cameras, Sony Digital cameras and Nikon digital cameras are widely known for their Ultra compact models. These are digital cameras which are less than 1 inch in thickness and offer stylish camera bodies in multiple colors. Ultra-thin models usually are very easy to use and do not offer "extra" or high-end features.
Point-and-shoot models
These are digital cameras that are easy to use and have no manual-control features. You can take the camera out of the box, load or charge the battery and memory card and begin shooting immediately with this type of camera. Point-and-shoot models vary in size and in the types of features they offer. Canon digital cameras and Nikon Digital cameras are the best brands of this type.
Advanced models
There are also digital cameras that offer many manual-control features. They sometimes include interchangeable digital camera lenses and many add-on features, such as external flash units. They do not come cheap and are usually used by intermediate, experienced and professional photographers. Olympus digital cameras, Canon digital cameras and Nikon digital cameras are the best brands for these types of digital cameras.
