Top Five Compact Consumer Digital Cameras. August 2009

2009 has seen a number of impressive consumer digital cameras hit the market. None more so than the five we have selected below. Ranging in price and features, it’s no wonder why these have been at the right end of top sellers lists throughout the year. Let’s waste no time in getting to know them:

Panasonic Lumix TZ7

This camera almost needs no introduction, flying off the shelves at every camera and electrical shop. Stunning Image quality all round, HD movies, sharp focus and a good image stabilizer. The lumix 12x optical zoom is a real winner, and has produced stunning results in the labs. 27 scene modes will keep you busy, however the auto mode is a solid option. 10.1 MP Panasonic Lumix TZ-7 is a strong contender and will be here for a while. Serious consideration @ £280.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS15

Similar to the TZ-7, this 12 megapixel offering boasts a smaller, slicker frame – making it extremely portable. Picture quality, again is stunning – something we have come to expect from the Panasonics. There have been some complaints about small buttons, generally OK unless you have large fingers. The lack of HD is also worth noting. Not a bad deal for £149.95

Canon IXUS 100 IS

The first thing you’ll notice about this camera, its good looks. Undoubtedly the sexiest camera we’ve seen this year – and not too bad inside. Tiny dimensions and rounded corners allow it to slip into the picket. Couple this with good picture quality, quick responsiveness and ease-of-use, you can see why this has been selling well. Available in silver, red, black and gold. There is no wide-angle lens, and in tests the body has scratched and marked easily.

Sony Cybershot t900

Another attractive camera here, excellent build quality and a nice polished finish. Feels durable, typical of Sony. Can record high quality HD videos, although maybe you’d expect more at such a highly priced camera. The T900 is by far the most expensive out of these cameras, and some users have reported less than amazing image quality. Opinion seems to be mixed about the sliding method of opening, decide for yourself! Expensive, but still a top notch 12 mp digital camera.

Samsung ES15

The ES15 represents the budget choice in our shortlist. This 10 mp digital camera represents a great bargain at only £68.96. Plenty of options, great quality pictures and an attractive design make it a worthwhile consideration. It’s easy to use and ideal for a beginner. Definitely worth a shout!

Compare Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 and DMC-ZS3 - Which Compact Digital Camera Meets Your Needs

16

This article will compare the Lumix ZS1 and ZS3.

Beginning with the basic specifications that are identical in both cameras:

10.1 Megapixels 12x Zoom Range (25-300mm) Optical Image Stabilization 80-6400 ISO Range 27 Scene Modes with Intelligent Auto Image Quality rated highest among Digital Compacts with similar features (DPReview.com)

The features that are different (ZS1 vs ZS3):

LCD - 2.7″ with 230k resolution (ZS1) vs 3.0″ with 460k (ZS3)  Image Sensor - 1/2.5″ (ZS1) vs 1/2.33″ (ZS3) Video - 848×480 30fps video w/mono sound (ZS1) vs 720p 60fps video w/stereo sound (ZS3)

These 3 features add just over $100 to the price tag for the ZS3. Yet, in spite of the extra $$$, the Lumix ZS3 is outselling its ZS1 cousin by a large margin. Why??

The reason is that most digital compact camera users are now quite comfortable with using their “point and shoot” camera for their basic video needs. And the difference in this feature is significant when you consider many folks are now viewing on big screen HD televisions.

The other big difference is the LCD screen. While 0.3″ does not seem that big of a deal, when added to double the pixel resolution (230,000 vs 460,000), the view quality of the live view and playback is significant.

With respect to image quality and printing images, in a comparison test against other super zoom cameras, the ZS1 and ZS3 were dual winners at DPReview.com.

The final word comes from those who have actually purchased the camera for personal use. After all, the consumer has the last word in satisfaction.

Checking the user reviews at DPReview.com and Amazon.com, both cameras rated highly - at least 4.16 out of 5. In fact, at Amazon, the Lumix ZS1 rated at an impressive 4.67 (out of 5).

As you make your digital camera buying decision, keep the Panasonic Lumix ZS1 and ZS3 in mind. And do not forget about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5, which has the same features as the more expensive ZS3 with respect to video and image quality (there have been some upgrades to the way video is recorded in the ZS3 that take up less storage space and give the user an option as to the recording mode, but the TZ5 video is comparable to its newer sibling). Picking up the TZ5 would produce a savings of more than $150.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 is getting a lot of attention from camera buyers at online stores. Much more about highly rated camera information is available at www.digital-photographic-resources.com.

2 Great Digital Compact Cameras - 3 Major Differences Between Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 and DMC-ZS3

There are some features that are identical, but then there are 3 major differences between the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 and DMC-ZS3.

First let’s take a look at the features that are similar that help these two cameras stand apart from the digital compact camera crowd.

10.1 megapixel image sensor Leica Lens with 25-400mm Optical Zoom - this is an amazing range, especially with the extremely high image quality ratings enjoyed by both cameras ISO of 80-1600 (expandable to 6400 with high sensitivity) or auto Fantastic image quality iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode - includes Face Detection, Subject Detection, AF (auto focus) Tracking, Scene Detection (Intelligent Scene Selector), Light Detection (Intelligent Exposure and Auto Backlight Compensation)

One note about the ISO range of compact digital cameras - most compacts are notorious for the amount of digital noise at higher ISO settings, and the Panasonic line of compact digital cameras is no different. However, Panasonic is making advances in this area of technology so that the noise level is less than other cameras of similar price and features.

The differences between the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 and DMC-ZS3 are few, but they are significant enough for Panasonic to release two cameras.

First difference: The LCD panel - the ZS1 has a 2.7″ LCD display with 230,000 pixel screen resolution while the ZS3 has a 3.0″ polycrystalline LCD display with 460,000 pixel screen resolution capable of wide angle viewing. The extra 0.3″ with double the pixel resolution make viewing and composing your images in more difficult light much easier. Second difference: Video - the ZS1 has video capability that most compact camera users are familiar with at 640×480 pixels, 30fps and mono sound. In the ZS3 Panasonic has raised the bar, including HD Movie at 1280×720, 60fps and stereo sound. Playback is pretty much equivalent to the playback of a dedicated camcorder. Intelligent Auto is also part of the video experience so that face detection and scene detection render the best quality video. Third difference: Price - this would seem like a foregone conclusion, but consider that the difference in price is only about $100. If you are looking for a fantastic camera that takes the highest rated photos for a compact digital camera, either one of these two will qualify. However, if you are in the market for a compact digital camera that also takes amazing video, the ZS3 is the camera for you.

For compact camera buyers, this is excellent news. There are two great digital compact cameras to consider in the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1 and Lumix DMC-ZS3. They both produce award winning images (see dpreview’s “compact super zoom camera test”) and have terrific range from wide angle to 12x zoom. To actually view the side-by-side comparison take a look at http://www.digital-photographic-resources.com.

I love photography and all things related to it. Cameras, camera gear, and image editing software fascinate me, so I am either buying the newest piece of equipment (or software) or researching my next purchase. Be sure to visit the Cameras-N-Stuff Blog.

Leica Compact Digital Cameras

The latest Leica mini digital camera offered by Minox can make an ideal choice which perfectly combines classical vintage style and outstanding technology in just one unit. The compact and stylish digital camera features a commanding 32 megabytes internal memory, 1.5 inch color display, 5 mega-pixels resolution and around 2 GB space for storage on SD cards to help photographers take images in the best quality.

In 2004 the M Leica became the longest lasting 35mm camera making it the ‘daddy’ of them all. Nikon F lasted 15 years before being totally redesigned and the Rollie made 30 years plus. Ok, one more!! The Exacta saw 38 years but to reach a 50th celebration must mean that Leica has a winner on its hands.

The Leica digital camera reviews will include the C-LUX 2, which runs about $450. This camera has 7.2 megapixels with three times optical zoom. This camera is very similar to Panasonics DMC- FX30. It is a very easy-to-use camera is lightweight, compact and has image stabilization. The only downfall to this camera is it uses a custom Liton battery, which could cost you some money if you need to replace it.

This camera does not need a viewfinder because it offers a two and a half inch viewing screen so you can see exactly what you are shooting.

As for quality, this may be a bit easier to rank. At the top would be Leica, followed by Panasonic, Minolta, Olympus, Yashica, Practika, Pentacon, Fuji, and Zeiss. There are several other brands, and just because they are not on this list does not mean they are bad brands. In fact, in this time there is really no such thing as “bad camera brand”, but there are just certain brands that really shine.

Now if you want to bend just a bit, and you’d like to explore those later M series cameras, you can probably get a 1960-ish Leica M2 with a superb Submicron 50mm f2 lens somewhere in the $500-$600 range. All the same thoughts apply in regards to condition, etc. The biggest advantage of the M series over the old screw mount series is that if your fiance’ eventually wants to get a modern Leica (for work AND pleasure), any lenses he already has with the M2 would be interchangeable with the later camera.

Affordability may not be the first thing in the minds of true photography buffs. But, if comparable features are provided then, it is natural that the more affordable camera will be picked. This is what is tapped by the latest Pentax-k7 which is a greatly affordable DSLR camera which poses serious threat to Nikon and Canon in the DSLR scene. Compared to bulky DSLRs like Nikon D300 and Olympus E-3, the pentax-k7 is a small, compact and light DSLR in the market.

So, with all these excellent features, this latest offers a detail setting and the best quality images to anyone looking to capture perfect images. The CCD imaging sensor of this digital camera was specially created to fit the settings of the entire series and due to this the resolution of 5 mega-pixels is magnificent. This latest CCD technology helps in reducing the noise considerably making the photographer to get excellent quality photos. Overall, the Leica mini digital camera is entirely covered with all the necessary features making this camera the best choice for everyone.
