How can you upload videos from a digital Sony videocamera that takes tape?

I'm doing a project for school and I had to film something on my video camera. It's a Sony Digital Handycam and I've probably have had it for a couple of years now. I have a USB cord but when I connect it, I get the pictures on the memory stick also on it. How can I upload my video from the camera to my Mac? Do I need a different cord?

  1. I’m not completely sure, but to put video from a video camera on to your computer you need a firewire, not a USB. Before you go buy one, take a look at your camera/computer and see whether it is a 4 pin connection (a small thing that looks like a rectangle with a dent in it) or a 6 pin connection (a bigger one that is about the same size and shape as a USB cable). I think the reason you are getting pictures when you plug it in is because digital cameras use USB.

  2. Sounds like it’s Hi8 not digital. If it’s Hi8 you need a capture card or USB dangle from Turtle Beach.

If it’s digital you need a firewire card or connection and cable.

  3. If the tapes are digital mini dvs, you need a 4 – 6 pin firewire cable to transfer the footage to your Mac if it has a firewire port and iMovie. iMovie won’t recognize a camcorder when connected with a USB cable.
