What Olympus digital camera should I purchase for poster quality prints?

How would an Olympus SP-550UZ do?

  1. I used an older but similar model Olympus camera. It was a nice camera.

When you say “poster quality” if you mean a 24×46 inch print at 300dpi then on paper a 7MP camera isn’t enough. Having said that it is still possible to get large and stunning prints out of cameras under 10MP. I’ve done many posters at 24×36 inch size on 6-7MP cameras and the results were fine.

Large format printers have an amazing ability to print from files with relatively low resolution but create stunning results anyway. I’ve done many huge prints at only 120dpi and was amazed at how clear they looked. On a desktop printer going to 120dpi would be hell.

If your aim is to do large format printing then try to get the best quality and highest resolution you can afford in your camera and some really good lenses. Also keep in mind that the method of printing plays a key role in whether or not something may be considered “poster quality”.

  2. According to Flickr it is rated 10 out of 148 Olympus cameras.

    According to Cnet:
The Bottom Line: Olympus’ SP-550UZ has great ergonomics, but disappointingly slow performance and soft, noisy images drag it down.

Specs: Full body, 7.1 megapixels, 18 x, 2.5 in LCD display, 20 MB – Integrated
