Pick a Nikon DSLR Digital Camera for the Rest of Your Life – Nikon D7000 D700 D3s D3x D3100 D5000
artoftheimage.blogspot.com - Discussing Thom Hogan's "Camera For Life" question that was posed to him. A reader asked Thom if he had to choose a camera right now that would last him for the rest of his life, what would he choose. Bear in mind, Thom shoots Nikon DSLR digital cameras, so we're only talking Nikon here. He rules out 4 and compacts right away because of image quality, and then we're left with the current Nikon offering... the Nikon D3100, Nikon D5000, Nikon D7000, Nikon D700, Nikon D3s, and Nikon D3x. Here's what he chose...

D700. Why? its Full frame, rugged, superior image quality, pro features. FX makes lens choice easy. A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens on FX. No multiplying by 1.5 to get focal length. Video? Who cares?

of course a nikon d7000 ………

hmmm some good points raised here….camera for life? Well then MY choice would be a Hasselblad H4D-60, a no brainer really.

Canon 5d2 or d700 but I would lean more toward the canon because of the video capabilities.

Nikon sucks. it takes for ever to release a damn dslr. It’s so pathetic how it;s trying to be Canon but can’t be.

Either 5D Mark II or D700, both with either 24mm 1.4 or 35 1.4 from both companies respectively. Depends what I plan on shooting most.

@FrodoDojo “As I get older I’ve realized that the best camera is the one you are most likely to have with you most of the time.” AMEN BROTHER!

Shoot a D700 with some of their pro glass packages you would have to say that this is the camera of choice. it feels right, quality is superb, not a huge sensor but I’ve blown up some pretty large print that are tack sharp. That being said – I am still searching for the compact like say the x100 – anything that is easier to carry around. As I get older I’ve realized that the best camera is the one you are most likely to have with you most of the time.

What first comes to mind is the Frankencamera (from the Stanford University Photo Scientists).

My pick is D7000!

I was going to pick 1Ds MkIII or 1D MkIV since they’re superb cameras but then I thought they’d be too heavy. So I pick the 5D MkII. Full frame and great image quality and high ISO performance.

5D MkII
June 3rd, 2011 - 14:45
Canon 60D

D7000. Gotta have video.
June 3rd, 2011 - 15:35
If i had money for it it would be D 700
June 3rd, 2011 - 16:19
D3s even though I’ve never tried one. I had a D700 but my “camera for life” would have video options.

D700 !

I’ve only had a chance to play with the M9 in a store but if I had the dollars, that would be the camera. Size is more important for me than lens selection. I have to say that after a few more Fuji x100 reviews come in, that may end up being my camera (at least for it’s life span).

D7000 and D700

@johnnybrazil01 – It does work, and I’ve done it on a few of the videos. It’s more work than just using a white backdrop, and it doesn’t look quite as clean. Very doable, just easier with the white backdrop. Honestly, you can use a white sheet if you don’t have a white backdrop. I’ve done that when my white backdrops were in the laundry.

I’d want a Nikon D3S, honestly if I had the money to get it I would be able to buy a bag that could carry that and all the lenses. I don’t care about the size of the camera.
