the other way of doing this is actually setting the K value – the temperature.

Thanks! This was so helpful, and much easier than I could have ever guessed! I have read the manual for my d700 multiple times only to be bored to death and not get anywhere. I use a 6″ Photovision calibration target for exposure and white balance, though anything that is neutral (white/black/grey) will work.

D3, D700, D300 all have the same procedure.
You can use a gray card if you want to, it’s just a bit less convenient to carry around since it doesn’t fold up. I wouldn’t use a white piece of paper or posterboard. If you go to any office supply store and look at their different “white” papers you will see that they can vary greatly.

I think he said D300, not D3. This is the DX version of the D700 FF.
I use half of a white 3 ring binder that I cut apart (works fine and cleans up easy). It’s one of the matte ones.

You also said that you’re testing on a D3. That was not a D3. Probably a D700. I know it doesn’t make much of a difference; just saying.
Is there a WAY cheaper way of doing this? Like a gray card/posterboard.
